Galkacyo

BACKGROUND

In August 1999 a group of women educators and professionals led by Ms. Hawa Aden Mohamed came together to mobilize community and international resources to rehabilitate the former women adult education centre in Galkayo, which had been looted and destroyed during the civil war. The rehabilitation of the ruined building and building of new facilities marked the establishment of Galkayo Education Center for Peace and Development (GECPD). Since this time, GECPD has been receiving support from the local community (both in Somalia and Diaspora), international organizations and individuals to expand facilities at the main center and build new centers to address the education and skills training needs in the communities. 7 such centers have been established in Galkayo key among them being;

The center currently offers Integrated Literacy Education Programs, Tailoring Skills Training and Computer Skills Training programs to women and girls from the host and IDP community in Galkayo.

GECPD also runs early childhood development, formal primary, integrated non-formal second chance education, integrated vocational skills training, integrated sports and youth development, awareness and advocacy programs in 5 other centers in Galkayo with the coordination at the GECPD Main Center.

The center serves as the operations hub of GECPD’s programs and is located in Galkayo town along the main Galkayo-Garowe road. Establishment of the center started in August 1999 with the construction and rehabilitation of the Center to provide functional literacy and formal basic education to returnee, poor family and IDP women and girls from the surroundings of Galkayo. The center comprises of 11 office rooms, 7 classrooms, a Tailoring Skills Training room equipped with sewing machines, 2 store rooms, 1 conference hall, a residential unit, an elevated water tank and 6 shop outlets for income generation to support GECPD programs.
